Introduction

The Deluxe Trainer is an add-on product for SmallBall Baseball. Its a tool designed to make training your team easier and more organized. The Deluxe Trainer integrates into the SmallBall interface, so that you have easy access to it. Further, your purchase of the Deluxe Trainer links it to your team, not to your computer! This means you not only have the ability to access the Deluxe Trainer from your computer, you can use the Deluxe Trainer to train your team from ANY computer, at any time, by simply logging into SmallBall.

What the Deluxe Trainer IS

The Deluxe Trainer offers many conveniences: it allows you to easily concentrate training on specific skills; it allows you to set up individual training schedules for each ballplayer, so that a players weak area can always be focused upon; it provides an easy way to save and organize notes about your players; it even provides a quick interface for changing your line-up or player field positions as players skills grow and change.

What the Deluxe Trainer is NOT

The Deluxe Trainer is not a superior training area. It does not allow you to grow your teams skills any faster than you could through the standard trainer. Any skill gains that your players receive while using the Deluxe Trainer could also be gained from solely using the Standard Trainer.

The advantages of the Deluxe Trainer are found in its ease and speed of use. Only within the Deluxe Trainer can you have every player on the team training toward the specific goals you want, all at the same time -- while youre reviewing stats, revising the batting order, or busy doing something entirely different, like writing an e-mail.

Familiar Aspects of the User Interface

Some aspects of the Deluxe Trainer work the same as in the Standard Trainer. Just in the Standard Trainer, your players are given their skill gains at regular intervals during training. When a player earns skill points, a familiar (though more fancy) cluster of sparkles will briefly appear around them. The more sparkles that appear, the more points the player has gained.

Making a player the Selected Player

You can interact with your players just as in the Standard Trainer, by clicking on a player. When you click on a player, that player then becomes the Selected Player. As in the Standard Trainer, when you click on a player, his Training Potential pie appears under his feet, and the center scoreboard displays the selected players name and stats.

You can make a new player the Selected Player in other ways too:

  • You can click on their name on the scoreboard.
  • If the clipboard is open to any page, you can click on their name.
  • If the clipboard is open, and you are on the Roster page, you can click on their icon.

Also, just as in the Standard Trainer, if a player is the Selected Player when he earns skill points, a text message will briefly appear on the scoreboard to give the exact details of how many points where earned, and for what skill(s).

The Scoreboard

As in the Standard Trainer, you can click on any name on the scoreboard to see that players stats. The scoreboard does display occasional quotes and tips on how your team is developing. And just as in the Standard Trainer, you can click on any of the icons to the right of the players name, in order to sort the name list on the right by that skill (highest skill at the top).

The Deluxe Trainer has two significant improvements on the scoreboard, however: when you select a player or his name, the scoreboard will display any Managers notes youve written about that player below his stats; also, the scoreboards name list has arrows which allows you to scroll through the full list of players on your team. Now, you can quickly tell who sorts to the very bottom of your entire team when you sort by each skill.

The Practice Field

The Deluxe Trainer has a practice field, as the Standard Trainer does but it works a bit differently. Depending on how youve set up The Deluxe Trainer to start, not all players will automatically run to their field positions and start practicing on the field.

If you want your team to move to their assigned field positions and start practice on the field, press the Positions button on the right side of the top menu. Once players are on the field, they will throw balls around to practice throwing and catching.

Some new things to take note of about this practice field:

  • If a Pitcher and Catcher are on the field, the Pitcher WILL pitch. However, if either the Pitcher or Catcher is on the field without the other, he will throw and catch along with other players on the field.
  • A Pitcher AND Catcher must be present for the Pitcher to pitch to a player who is at-bat.
  • The fielder WILL attempt to field any ball that is hit by the Batter.
  • You CANNOT train for running on the Practice Field. Whenever you click-and-drag a player to another area within the field, he swaps positions with the nearest player (not permanently, only for that practice).
  • You CANNOT select a single player for all the other players to throw to. Players will always throw the ball randomly, regardless of who is highlighted.

The Deluxe Trainer Training Venues

The Rest Area

Typically, when you start the Deluxe Trainer, your team will run onto the field, and divide up into two groups and stand in the two Rest Areas. The Rest Area is where players rest. Its also where players wait for a training area (also called a training venue) to empty so that they can use it. At any time, you can click-and-drag a player to a Rest Area to make him stop training.

Using the specialized Training Venues

One of the major advantages of the Deluxe Trainer is the easy and precise control it gives you over the training your players do for specific skill gains! The Specialized Training Venues in the Deluxe Trainer allow you to focus all of a players energy on JUST the skills you want to.

To use the Training Venues, click and drag a player onto it. The player will automatically start training, and will continue to train until all their TP is depleted, or until to click and drag them to a new venue or the rest area. Players will perform in the venue in an exaggerated, but similar, way to how they would in a real game a poor catcher will drop the ball repeatedly, a great batter will hit the ball solidly! Simply watching your teams performance while training can help you learn much about their skills, or lack of!

The Pitching venue

The fastest way to have your pitcher concentrate on his pitching skill is to click-and-drag him to the pitching venue on the lower left side of the training field. Obviously, only one pitcher can train here at a time. The pitcher will repeatedly throw pitches to the machine. The pitching machine will display the speed of each pitch as well as tell you if the pitch was inside the strike zone or not.

The Track

To make a player run faster, simply drag the player onto the circular track that surrounds the training area. Drag as many players as you want onto the track to run at the same time. Faster runners will pass slower runners. Also, in case you were wondering, its your left-handed players that run around the track counter-clock-wise!

The Throwing Practice venue

To give a player a better throwing arm, click-and-drag the player to the Throwing venue at the top of the screen. Only one player can train here at a time. If you drag a new player into this area while another player is training, the current training player will stop training and run into a Rest Area. The player will repeatedly throw balls as far as he can. The readout at the left end of the Throwing area tells you exactly how far he has thrown the last ball.

The Fielding Practice venue

To give a player practice on fielding balls, click-and-drag the player into the Fielding Practice area on the right side of the screen. Up to three players can train here simultaneously, each taking a turn to go after the tossed ball, catch it and throw it back to the machine. If you drag a new player into this area while 3 other players are already training, one of them will stop training and run into a Rest Area. This venue trains mostly on catching, but also trains a little on running, and just a slight bit on throwing.

The Contact Swing batting cage

To increase a players ability to hit the ball, and place it well, put him in the orange Contact Swing Batting cage, located just left of the Fielding Practice Venue. Only one player can train here at a time. If you drag a new player into this area while another player is training, the current training player will stop training and run into a Rest Area. The player will attempt to hit each ball pitched by the machine. The percentage of balls hit during training is displayed on the readout after every pitch. Remember that a players average may be much higher here than in a game, since the readout counts ALL hits, regardless of how well they were hit or placed. This venue trains mostly on the players ability to make contact with the ball, but also does a fair amount of training on the players ability to place the ball well, and also gives a slight bit of training on the players swing power. More skill is earned when the player hits the ball than when he does not.

The Power Swing batting cage

To increase a players strength to hit the ball far, put him in the red Power Swing Batting cage, located between the Contact Swing batting cage and the Practice Field. Only one player can train here at a time. If you drag a new player into this area while another player is training, the current training player will stop training and run into a Rest Area. The player will attempt to solidly hit each ball pitched by the machine. The distance each ball is hit is displayed on the readout. Good players may hit the ball very far very often just as batters do in Home Run Derby competitions (the balls are pitched to BE hit!). This venue trains mostly solely on the players swing power, but slightly gives training on contact skill and placement skill. Swing Power is ONLY earned when the player hits the ball.

The Play Catch Area

To train players on both catching and throwing at the same time, send him to the Play Catch area at the bottom left side of the screen. One, two or three players can train together here at the same time. Players will randomly toss balls back and forth, and a single player tosses the ball up to catch himself. If you drag a new player into this area while 3 other players are already training, one of them will stop training and run into a Rest Area.

[Game Hint: Training DOES change somewhat depending on how many players are here simultaneously].

Using Training Venues through personal Auto-training schedules

In addition to using the venues by manually click-and-dragging players to them, you can also build individualized training schedules for each player on your team, to define which specific venue(s) each player should to go to, and to also define how long to stay at each venue! To learn more about this, read about the Player Schedule page of the Clipboard.

Using Training Venues through the Random Training feature

The Deluxe Trainer also allows you to send your players to a new randomly chosen venue every minute until they use up their TP. This can be helpful when you want to train your team but you dont have time to do it one player at a time, and you also dont have time to set up (or change) your personalized Training schedules. To use the Random Trainer, click on Actions at the top of the menu, and then select Start Random Training.

The Main Menu

At the top of the screen, there are four Baseball-looking buttons. Whenever one of these buttons is flashing, that means that it is actively in use.

The Clipboard Button

Click on this button to bring up (or remove) the Clipboard. Read more about the Clipboard below.

The Auto-Train Button

Click on this button to start (or stop) the Auto-training of your team. Remember, you must define each players auto-training schedules first, as explained below. If any players were in a training venue that you click-and-dragged them to, they will stop that training in that venue and follow their Auto-training schedule.

NOTE: If you press the Auto-Train button and some players run to a Rest Area, its likely that either:

  • the venue those players want to go to FIRST is occupied and they are waiting for it to empty, or
  • they have no training schedule defined.

The Rest All Button

Click on this button to stop the entire team while they are training, and return them to the Rest Areas. NOTE: If the team was Auto-training, auto-training will be turned off.

The Positions Button

Click on this button to move the active players on your roster into their field positions on the Practice field regardless of whatever activities or positions they are in currently. This is useful when you just want to see how youve set up the team field positions, or to return the players to their true positions after click-and-dragging them into other positions.

The Clipboard

The Clipboard contains 4 pages, each with an upper and lower window. You can view each page by clicking on the tabs at the top of the clipboard, labelled as: Roster, Team Schedule,
Player Schedule and Options.

The upper window changes with each new page that's selected. The lower window always shows the current line-up and a player sort list, except on the Options page, where it displays an interface that allows you to change your team colors.

Below are the many features you have access to through the Clipboard.

Sorting your players by skills and stats

The right side of the lower window of the clipboard displays a list of your teams players (except when viewing the Options page).

When you first start The Deluxe Trainer, the list is sorted by Bat Power, with the player with the highest Batting Power at the top of the list. You can easily change the sort to see who on your team has the most RBIs, who runs the fastest, or who is in the best mood.

To sort the list by another category, click on the small down arrow to the right of the word Bat Power. A small list of all available categories will appear. Scroll through this list using the Up and Down arrows on the right edge and then click on the one you want, to automatically resort the list.

Changing your Line-up

The left side of the lower window of the clipboard displays the batting line-up of your team (except when viewing the Options page).

You can switch the batting order of any two players in the line-up by click-and-dragging one players name over anothers. To switch an active player for a bench player in the line-up, you must swap their field positions first.

Changing player Field Positions

Click on the Roster tab to view the field positions for your players. You can also use this page to view the exact amount of TP each player has and also to view their stats. You can switch the field position of any two players by click-and-dragging one players icon on the clipboard field image over anothers.

To swap an active player for one thats on the bench, simply click-and-drag the active players icon down over the player name on the Bench list in the lower right side of the upper window the benched player will now field that position in future games and will also take the swapped players position in the Batting Line-up.

Getting an overview of your teams Auto-Training schedule

Click on the Team Schedule tab to view a list showing what venue(s) each player has been assigned to use during auto-training. Use this screen to quickly check your entire teams auto-training schedule all at once.

Setting Individual Auto-training schedules

Click on the Player Schedule tab to define, review, or change the auto-training schedule for any selected player.

The Player Schedule page shows 8 rows of activities and 10 baseballs (all initially located in the row for Resting). To assign the selected player to train in a particular venue, move one or more balls into that venues row. Each ball represents roughly 1/10th of a full pie of TP.

Players always follow their auto-train schedule in the same order (as they are listed on the screen, starting at the top).

If your player does not have a full pie TP, he will train in the venues starting at the top, until he runs out of TP.

Changing Team colors

Click on the Options tab to see the current team colors for your team.

You can click on colors in the palette here, just as in the Standard Trainer, to change the Hat and Uniform colors for your team. On the left side, you can also select the skin color for your team.

Once youve chosen your colors, click on the TEST button to see your color selections on the running player in the window. If you like the colors, press APPLY to make the color changes official for your team.

Changing Player names or your Team name

On every clipboard page, in the lower window, at the bottom left side, the team name and the currently selected players name are displayed. To change either one, simply click on the text and edit it.

Keeping Manager notes

On every clipboard page, in the lower window, to the right of the team name and player name, is a dark blue area where you can type up to three lines of text about the currently selected player.

These "manager notes" are recorded for each player separately, and they are always flashed briefly on the Deluxe Trainer scoreboard when a new player becomes the selected player, so that you create your own reminders about each player's weaknesses, strengths, or your future plans for changing their training schedule, etc -- even when the clipboard is closed!

Remember: to save ANY settings you make within the clipboard, simply close the clipboard.
